An Indiana woman accused of leaving her newborn baby in
a trashcan at a Tennessee rest stop was taken into custody
Tuesday (07/12/05). 21-year-old Carissa Roraus was released
from the Jellico (TN) hospital and taken to the Campbell
County (TN) Sheriffs Department where she was booked
on first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse and aggravated
child neglect. Roraus was hospitalized Saturday (07-09)
after police found her 25-miles from the welcome center
where she reportedly left the newborn baby. The baby girl
died shortly after she was born.
An autopsy revealed the baby died of asphyxiation. Witnesses
and a welcome center employee told police Roraus and two
men left the welcome center in a red car.
Their description of the vehicle helped police locate
the trio. Investigators say her boyfriend and his father
were in the car while Roraus gave birth, but they say
they thought Roraus was ill, not pregnant. Investigators
also say family members didnt have any idea she
was pregnant.
Roraus is being held on a $400 hundred thousand dollar
bond.
Her first court appearance is scheduled for August 16th.
