PORT ORCHARD, Wash. --People gathered on Thursday to honor the life of Jane Doe, a baby who was found dead and abandoned by the side of a Kitsap County road.
Teenagers found the baby discarded in a plastic bag on the side of Bielmeier Road in April of 2006. The baby was just one day old and still had her umbilical cord attached.
It is still not known who left the baby on the road or what the baby's name was. But one year after the tragic discovery, dozens came together to honor the baby with a proper burial at Sunset Lane Cemetery.
Her headstone calls her 'Dawn' - a name given to her by area residents who don't know anything about her.
"And I wish we could say to her 'God knows who you are. He knows what happens, he knows why, and he loves you still,' " said Melvin Byrd, a pastor.
The coroner, who helped bury the child, hopes that question is answered in this lifetime.
"We don't give up, this investigation will be open until we finally realized who the mother and father are," said Greg Sandstrom, the Kitsap County coroner.
